Description
Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH), Female - AMH-MIS may be used in the investigation of ovarian reserve since AMH concentrations in adult women reflect the number of small antral and preantral follicles entering the growth phase of their life cycle. These follicles are proportional to the number of primordial follicles that still remain in the ovary, or the ovarian reserve.
AMH is a hormone produced in women by the follicles of the ovaries in small clusters of cells known as granulosa cells. The function of AMH and corresponding blood levels have been noticed when a recent research proposed that the AMH level can be helpful as a measure of fertility by giving information about the amount of healthy eggs. The hormone is made by cells in the ovarian follicles only produced until menopause occurs when the follicles disappear. The AMH test has become widely used during the process of invitro fertilization.
AMH is indicated by granulosa cells of the ovary during the reproductive years and limits the formation of primary follicles by inhibiting excessive follicular induction by FSH.AMH expression is higher in the recruitment stage of folliculogenesis, in the preantral and small antral follicles.
AMH decreases throughout a woman`s reproductive life, which reflects the continuous decline of the oocyte/follicle pool with age and, accordingly, ovarian aging.
