Description
Helps in the diagnosis and treatment of liver, hemolytic, hematologic, and metabolic disorders, including hepatitis and gall bladder obstruction by measuring the level of bilirubin . Thus it measures the direct bilirubin and helps in the differentiation of hepatic disorders. Helps to diagnose liver and biliary disease.If there is increase in level of direct bilirubin due to biliary diseases prevailing there is signs of intrahepatic and extrahepatic lesions.Various conditions like cholestatic drug reactions ,Dubin- Johnson syndrome and Rotor syndrome shows elevated hepatocellular conditions.
It may also include medical conditions like hepatitis ,cirrhosis and advanced neoplastic states.Both direct and indirect bilirubin show increase in the serum with hepatitis thereby primarily associated with obstructive jaundice. Direct(conjugated) fraction will increase the total bilirubin associated with jaundice.
