Overview

Hepatobiliary disorders are the most common extraintestinal manifestations in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is an inflammatory disorder of the biliary system of the liver, which may progress to fibrosis and cirrhosis and liver failure, requiring liver transplantation.Approximately 70% of patient with PSC may have concurrent IBD in the form of ulcerative colitis or less frequently Crohn’s disease. These patients are also at higher risk to develop cholangiocarcinoma and colorectal neoplasia. The management of patients with concomitant IBD and PSC can be challenging with significant impact on the outcomes of colorectal surgery or liver transplantation.Hepatobiliary disease includes a heterogeneous group of diseases of the liver and biliary system caused by viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections, neoplasia, toxic chemicals, alcohol consumption, poor nutrition, metabolic disorders, and cardiac failure. The two predominant diseases of the liver in the United States are viral hepatitis and cirrhosis; the predominant chronic disease of the biliary system is cholelithiasis.

What is Alkaline Phosphatase

Alkaline phosphatase is one kind enzyme found in your body. Enzymes are proteins that help chemical reactions happen. For instance, they can break big molecules down into smaller parts, or they can help smaller molecules join together to form bigger structures. You have alkaline phosphatase throughout your body, including your liver, digestive system, kidneys, and bones. If your liver isn’t working right, the amount of ALP in your blood may be high. Doctors often use the test to look for blocked bile ducts. Other conditions that can cause problems with your liver include Liver cancer,Cirrhosis,Hepatitis or Blockage in the bile ducts. An ALP test may be performed to determine how well your liver and gallbladder are functioning or to identify problems with your bones.

The alkaline phosphatase test (ALP)

The alkaline phosphatase test (ALP) is used to help detect liver disease or bone disorders. It is often ordered along with other tests, such as a gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) test and/or as part of a liver panel. Alkaline Phosphatase - Serum alkaline phosphatase levels are of interest in the diagnosis of hepatobiliary disorders and bone disease associated with increased osteoblastic activity. Moderate elevations of alkaline phosphatase may be seen in several conditions that do not involve the liver or bone. Among these are Hodgkin's disease, congestive heart failure, ulcerative colitis, regional enteritis, and intra-abdominal bacterial infections. Elevations are also observed during the third trimester of pregnancy.Looking for diagnostics labs near me?. Use Tuhealthy App to find tb blood test near me.
