Syphilis

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that can have very serious complications when it is left untreated but it is can be cured with the right treatment. This sexually transmitted infection is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. This bacterial infection usually spread by sexual contact that starts as a painless sore.
It can also be transmitted from mother to baby during pregnancy or at birth, results in congenital syphilis.

Syphilis disease can be transmitted from person to person by direct contact with a syphilitic sore, known as a chancre
The symptoms and signs of syphilis can vary depending on the four stages as it presents (primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary).
The first stage involves a painless sore on the genitals, rectum, or mouth. Once the initial sore heals, the second stage is distingiushed by a rash. Further there will be no symptoms until the final stage which may occur years after. This final stage can result in damage to the nerves, brain, eyes or heart.

The average time of accurance of syphilis and the start of the first symptom is 21 days but it can range from 10 to 90 days.
Confirmation of this diseasse can be either through blood tests or direct visual inspection using dark field microscopy. More commonly blood tests are used ,as they are simple to perform.
