Description
CA 19-9 - Antigens are substances which help the immune system to respond. This test measures the amount of protein CA 19-9 (cancer antigen 19-9) in the blood.A large percentage of patients with gastrointestinal tumors (such as pancreatic, liver, gastric, colorectal tumors) and some other malignancies have been shown to have elevated serum CA 19-9 levels. Serum CA 19-9 levels may be useful for monitoring disease activity or predicting relapse following treatment. CA 19-9 should not be used as a screening test.High amount of CA 19-9 level in blood is the sign of pancreatic cancer.
This test was performed using the Siemens chemiluminescent method. Values obtained from different assay methods cannot be used interchangeably. CA 19-9 levels, regardless of value, should not be interpreted as absolute evidence of the presence or absence of disease.
