Description
Carbon Dioxide test is used to evaluate the total carbonate buffering system in the body, acid-base balance. Carbon Dioxide measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of numerous potentially serious disorders associated with changes in body acid-base balance.
Your kidneys and lungs balance the levels of carbon dioxide, bicarbonate, and carbonic acid in the blood. Carbon dioxide levels can be used to help diagnose kidney disease. High results may represent respiratory acidosis with CO2 retention, or metabolic alkalosis (eg, prolonged vomiting). Low value may indicate respiratory alkalosis as in hyperventilation or metabolic acidosis (eg, ketoacidosis).
This is a routine health checkup test and those experiencing symptoms associated with acidosis or alkalosis such as prolonged vomiting and/or diarrhea, weakness, fatigue and difficulty breathing can use this test for diagnose kidney disease.
