Description
Hepatitis B surface antibody quantitation is used to determine hepatitis B immune status, ie, to determine if the patient has developed immunity against the hepatitis B virus. Such immunity may develop following exposure to the hepatitis B virus or its vaccine. Hepatitis B Surface Antibody Immunity, Quantitative assay is used to determine immune status for Hepatitis B as =10 mIU/mL as per CDC Guidelines.
Hepatitis B surface antibody quantitation test will determine previous exposure to the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) as well as immunity status of the hepatitis B vaccination. Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection caused by the Hepatitis B Virus. HBV attacks the cells in the liver and can lead to liver failure, cirrhosis (scarring) or cancer of the liver. However, HBV is easily preventable by a vaccine.
Those who are at higher risk for the virus include health care workers, emergency personnel, individuals who lives with someone who is infected, individuals who have multiple sex partners or have been diagnosed with an STD, injection drug users, individuals who received blood transfusions before 1992, and individuals who have had tattoos or body piercings. Pregnant women should also be tested for HBV.
