Description
Dilantin is an anticonvulsant hydantoin used for the treatment of generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) and complex partial seizures. Phenytoin is also used for prophylaxis in neurosurgical procedures. Dilantin works by slowing down impulses in the brain which cause seizures.Phenytoin levels are monitored to assure adequate therapeutic levels are achieved and to avoid toxicity.
The Dilantin test, sometimes known as total phenytoin lab test, Hydantoin blood test, measures the phenytoin blood level and is used to check if Dilantin is in the required range so the dosages can be adjusted as necessary.
Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Dilantin. Use of alcohol will increase the levels of phenytoin and can increase the risk of seizures thereby increase side effects.
Patients should not take Dilantin if allergic to phenytoin, or ever have had liver problems caused by phenytoin; or allergic to similar medicines.
