Description
Hemoglobinopathy evaluation is a group of tests that identifies the presence of abnormal forms of hemoglobin in order to screen and diagnose a hemoglobin disorder. Hemoglobin (Hb) is a protein found in red blood cells (RBCs) that binds to oxygen and helps to transport it throughout the body.
The size, shape and function of RBCs can be altered when hemoglobin variants are present which can result in insufficient oxygen transportation hence premature destruction of the cells which can lead to hemolytic anemia.
Hemoglobinopathy Evaluation - The detection and proper identification of hemoglobinopathies and thalassemias is an important aspect of the evaluation of patients with anemia, microcytosis and erythrocytosis.
Test includes Hemoglobin A, Hemoglobin F, Hemoglobin, Hemoglobin A2 (Quant), Hemoglobin S, Hemoglobin C, Hemoglobin E and any hemoglobin variants, Red Blood Cell Count, Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, MCV, MCH, RDW.
