Description
Measles is caused by rubeola virus. It causes fever, irritability, respiratory illness, and the characteristic skin rash. Immunization has greatly diminished the incidence of measles. The immunity test confirms if any person is vaccinated against this virus. The presence of IgG is consistent with immunity or prior exposure. IgM is consistent with current or recent infection. IgM tests can generate false positive results and low levels of IgM can persist for longer than 12 months. If antibodies are present, then the tester has protection against the measles virus. If antibodies are not present, then the tester has no protection against the virus.

Measles can be spread through contact, can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left the area. That is why it`s important to ensure that you`re protected against this deadly disease. Dectection of IgG-class antibodies indicates prior exposure to the measles virus through infection or immunization. Individuals testing positive are considered immune to measles infection.

This test is a serum test and the results may be as such Negative test indicates no detectable IgG antibody to Measles virus. A negative result indicates no current or previous infection with Measles virus. Such individuals are presumed to be susceptible to primary infection .However, specimen taken too early during a primary infection may not have detectable levels of IgG antibody. If primary infection is suspected, another specimen (convalescent) should be taken in 8-14 days and tested concurrently in the same assay with the original (acute) specimen to look for seroconversion. If acute specimen is negative and convalescent specimen is positive, seroconversion has taken place and a primary Measles virus infection is indicated.

Test results may vary depending on your age, gender, health history, the method used for the test, and other things. The body makes two rubella antibodies: IgM and IgG. If IgM is found in your blood, you may have had a recent infection. If IgG is present, it could mean that you had a rubella infection in the past or that you had a vaccine. These antibodies mean that you have the protection you need.
