Description
Thyroid peroxidase, also called thyroperoxidase (TPO) or iodide peroxidase, is an enzyme expressed mainly in the thyroid where it is secreted into colloid.
Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) is an enzyme that plays key role in thyroid hormone production. When the immune system is overactive it produce proteins called TPO antibodies which slow down TPO`s activity. By obstructing the protein activity TPO antibodies become a reason for the thyroid gland to be underactive and causes a condition called hypothyroidism.
Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPO) -
Assists in the diagnosis of thyroid diseases such as endemic goiter, Graves Disease, autoimmune thyroiditis, Addison`s Disease, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, Hashimoto`s Disease and polyendocrine auto-immunopathies.
The Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) antibodies test is a blood test that is used to help determine and differentiate between whether an individual has underactive thyroid or inflammation of the thyroid.
An underactive thyroid is known as hypothyroidism. Inflammation of the thyroid is known as thyroiditis.
